Nursing School and Shortbus

Hi all,
So, yesterday I embarked on a journey. A journey of knowledge, discovery, showing up at 5:50am to catch the shuttle, and (apparently) occasionally stripping to my underwear in lab and allowing my fellow students to exam me.
My friends, I have begun nursing school.
No, seriously, what I began two days ago was the world’s dullest orientation. Basically it was speaker after speaker telling us such thrilling facts as how to use the library, what to do if we have a nervous breakdown, and a forty minute film that basically boiled down to, “Don’t talk about the patients and their various illnesses.” By the end of the second day, we were finishing up an hour and a half long presentation about the campus tech support and my brains began leaking out my ears.
In two years it will all be worth it. In two years it will all be worth it. In two years…
On the plus side, I bought (on a complete whim) the movie “Shortbus”. I’ve never scene a more explicit movie that wasn’t in the special back room at the video store. And yet, somehow, the graphic sex acts weren’t arousing. Instead, I identified so much with the message of emotional isolation (especially James’s story) that I bawled through damn near half of it. I watched a man come on his own face, and it reduced me to tears.
There’s a scene in "Shortbus" where three men have sex, and one eats out another’s ass. If you can handle seeing things like that, please rent this movie.

Date: 2008-01-09 02:40 am (UTC)YAY for nursing school! My friend's a nurse, and she works 12 hour shifts in the baby department (there's a name for it, but I've got no clue) for 4 days on, 5 days off, and she LOVES IT. She's paid mega money, and she really enoys her work, her hospital lets her do continuing education courses so she can be paid MORE, and she said the schooling was totally worth it. In two years, you'll have a job, and a career, and you'll be worked hard but I think you'll be happy.
So there. JUST TWO YEARS! (note: Malcolm still has 2.5 years left before she begins anything resembling a real job, and she's already done 2.5 years... I also enjoy talking about myself in the third person.)

Date: 2008-01-09 02:57 am (UTC)Do you mean she works in the NICU? Or in OB/GYN? Anyway, I'm really happy to hear that your friend enjoys it. I could use a little positive feedback in that area, because I'm just a tad overwhelmed by everything I've gotten myself into. :P
"I don't know" in a good or bad way? Definitely "Shortbus" is pretty shocking, especially at first, but I found myself easing into it (no pun intended) as it went on. I've actually scene quite a few different types of porn, though, so that kind of lessened the blow (there I go again!). It just depends on your response to that sort of thing. It wasn't really very errotic, not like I was expecting.

Date: 2008-01-09 06:38 pm (UTC)"I don't know" in an I-don't-get-out-to-the-movie-rental-place-very-often way. And I have nothing against shocking, but I'm so lazy, I don't know if I'll actually get out and rent it.
