So today, my older sister is driving her son home from daycare. They pass a Catholic church, and my nephew exclaims, “Hey! That’s the church I go to with Gi-Gi!” (his great grandma, who comes to visit about once a month).

“With Gi-gi?,” my sister asks, confused. This is the first she’s heard of it.

“Yeah,” my nephew says. “Every time we go to the dollar store” (every time she visits) “we go here first, and she sprinkles me with holy water! Don’t worry,” he adds, “holy water is good.”

My sister knew nothing about these little ‘on the side’ baptisms, but she’s taken it in good nature. We’re not Catholic (actually, we’re Baptist, though I’m hardly strict about it), but I actually find it really sweet. After all, if his great grandma thinks that this is a good way to protect him, and it does no harm, then why not? I can’t help but wonder if she ever did the same for me when I was little (I certainly don’t remember if she did), but would be very moved if she did.
